Klovning on Utsira

Where does the name Klovning come from?

Klovning is a place name on Utsira, the island out in the North Sea west of Karmøy. It is the word klovning, from Old Norse klofningr, “cleft” or “crack”, and probably refers to a cleft in the landscape there.

Where is the Klovning farm?

The farm Klovning was established at this place. It lies in the south of Utsira, Norway’s smallest municipality, just above the harbour at Sørevågen, and it is where the Klovning family takes its name from.

What is the Klovning sea house in Sørevågen?

Down in the harbour at Sørevågen, Svend Mikal Larsen Klovning built a sea house in 1870, the same year the new state-built breakwater was finished. It was the base for fishing herring, coalfish, mackerel and lobster until the herring fishery faded in the 1950s. The boats and gear are still there, and today Haugalandmuseet shows it to visitors.
